A popular Fortnite streamer accuses the game of adding pay-to-win skins that can be used for camouflaging in plain sight to trick opponents.
A popular streamer has accused Fortnite of adding pay-to-win skins in the game, and there’s a grain of truth in such assumptions. Additionally, one of these skins is actually part of the recent Operation Snowdown event, which went live in the game a few days ago.
Operation Snowdown added a handful of festive new cosmetics that can be claimed for free by completing challenges. The most exciting part is the addition of two new character skins: the Snowmando Outfit and the Frost Squad Outfit. Both are wintery and delightful. On top of that, players can expect to unlock new cosmetics for pickaxes, back blings, gliders, and more.
According to SypherPK on YouTube, there are three special skins in Fortnite that can be viewed as pay-to-win cosmetics considering the advantages they are giving to players. The first costume featured in the video is called Lt. Evergreen, and it’s basically a Christmas tree outfit. The streamer used the Light Up emote to sneakily position his Christmas-themed character while hiding under a festive spruce tree and waiting for an unaware opponent to fall for the trap before killing the unaware player. After a successful elimination, SypherPK proceeded on hiding in plain sight next to a bush, and it surprisingly worked a few times, resulting in a Victory Royale. The other two skins showcased by the streamer, Nutcracker and Snowmando, are less powerful, but they nonetheless allow camouflaging in certain areas on Battle Island. For instance, the former costume can be used to hide oneself in Lazy Lake where two destructible Nutcracker statues are located. Using the Mystique skin, SypherPK also transformed into Snowmando, disguising himself as an NPC to trick unsuspecting players.
Fortnite is all about new skins and cosmetics, and a lot more are on their way to the game. Although the recent massive collaboration with Marvel is over, there are new superhero costumes coming in the form of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and the Taskmaster. According to the most recent leak, the characters will be accompanied by specifically designed pickaxes and back blings. Apart from obligatory accessories, Black Panther and Captain Marvel will also be treated to additional skin variants that will be glowing with power.
The three featured Fortnite character skins do give a tiny advantage when trying to hide, but strictly speaking, they don’t look much like pay-to-win cosmetics. A lot depends on players’ situational awareness, as demonstrated by the streamer himself. While several players fell for his traps, seasoned gamers immediately recognized a camouflaged bushman and a saluting Nutcracker. It definitely doesn’t sound as overpowered as the streamer tries to deliver, and additionally, everyone is now aware of these tricks thanks to SypherPK.
Fortnite is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
