This month on Games With Gold, Xbox is giving subscribers a Saint’s Row game, a side-scrolling action adventure, and a healthy dose of Double Fine.
The final month of 2020 will gift Xbox Live Gold subscribers with another quartet of interesting titles from Xbox‘s past, including Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell and The Raven Remastered. December’s Games With Gold freebies are the first to come after the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and while they’re compatible with the new consoles, owners should not expect anything that taxes them in this service. For months, Xbox Game Pass’s bigger games have picked up the slack with bigger games, leaving Games With Gold to usually offer more niche and overlooked titles in its collection.
It’s worth noting that, as is always the case for the purpose of staggered releases, one of the free Xbox One titles will be stretching over from last month’s offerings. This time around, that game is Swimsanity!, a multiplayer-focused underwater shooter that can be played in either co-op against gigantic bosses or in a four-player competitive suite. Swimsanity! is the first release from Decoy Games and features crossplay across Xbox, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. The game is still available for download for Gold subscribers until December 15.
As revealed in today’s Xbox Wire announcement of this month’s selection, December 1 will bring two new games to subscribers. On Xbox One, players can pick up The Raven Remastered from King Art Games and THQ Nordic. A rerelease of a 2013 adventure, The Raven Remastered is a three-part mystery set in 1960s London that shifts perspectives between several different characters. For those who prefer more over-the-top gameplay, the first of December will also gift players with the Xbox 360 version of Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell. An expandalone for Saints Row 4, this short open-world actioner casts players as Johnny Gat and/or Kenzie Kensington as they try to rescue the Boss protagonist from the mainline series from a devilish prison. This giveaway will make the original Saints Row the only game in the series not handed out at some point in the Games With Gold program.
On December 16, two other titles rotate into the spotlight. On Xbox One, players can grab the side-scrolling action title Bleed 2 from developer Ian Campbell and publisher Digerati. An arcadey hit with critics back in early 2017, Bleed 2 requires fast reflexes and bullet dodging skills to progress through a cavalcade of tough boss fights. Xbox 360 picks up the slow-paced slack in this batch with Stacking, a classic puzzle adventure from the fine folks at Double Fine. Playing as a tiny Russian nesting doll, players can overtake other civilians and gain their powers to progress in a way that’s coincidentally similar to Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs: Legion. The only difference is there’s much less hacking and much more charm to be had.
The monthly quartet of Xbox Games With Gold may now play second fiddle to Game Pass, but it’s good to see that the company has not shifted all of the attention over to the one subscription. Despite what the comments of every tweet, video, and post about the program continue to say, games like Stacking and Bleed 2 are fine bonuses to the Gold service that are well worth people’s time. They’re not going to blow everyone away, but they have their audience outside of the masses, and that’s fine.
